In Memory of Dr. Herbert J. Semler
Cardiologist | Founder | Visionary | Innovator

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Dr. Herbert J. Semler, founder of Semler Scientific and a remarkable figure in the field of cardiovascular medicine.

Dr. Semler co-founded Semler Scientific in 2007, serving as Chairman of the Board until 2017 and as Chief Executive Officer until 2012. Although he stepped away from active leadership over a decade ago, the impact of his vision continues to shape our work today. His unwavering commitment to patient care and innovation laid the foundation of our company and remains central to our mission.

A board-certified cardiologist, Dr. Semler dedicated over 45 years to advancing cardiovascular care. He was a prolific inventor, holding numerous patents and patent applications, including technologies used in Holter monitoring, cardiac telemetry, pacemaker surveillance, and cardiac event monitoring—most notably the development of the "King of Hearts" device. His invention of a femoral vascular hemostatic device has been used in the care of more than fifteen million patients worldwide.

Beyond his commercial and clinical achievements, Dr. Semler was a Professor of Cardiology at Oregon Health Sciences University (OHSU), where he founded and funded The Dr. Herbert and Shirley Semler Cardiovascular Institute. He was a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, the American College of Physicians, the Society of Cardiac Interventions and Angiography, and the American Heart Association. Throughout his career, he authored more than 90 published articles, leaving a lasting contribution to the academic and scientific community.

We extend our deepest condolences to the Semler family, including his beloved wife and our company’s co-founder, Shirley Semler. Dr. Semler's legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched, the innovations he brought to life, and the values that continue to guide Semler Scientific.

His legacy of care lives on.
