OpenPayments

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) established the Open Payments Program to promote transparency in financial relationships between physicians, teaching hospitals, and the healthcare industry. The program publicly discloses data on payments and transfers of value made by manufacturers to healthcare providers, ensuring visibility into these interactions.

Semler Scientific supports this commitment to transparency and ethical collaboration. By participating in the Open Payments Program, we help maintain accountability and reinforce public and professional trust in our partnerships with healthcare providers. The Open Payments database is accessible to anyone wishing to review, search, or download data related to these relationships.

Steps to look up “Semler Scientific” on Open Payments

  1. Go to the site
Navigate to https://openpaymentsdata.cms.gov/ — this is the home page. openpaymentsdata.cms.gov

  2. Choose what you're searching for
On the homepage, you should see a search bar or menu options such as:

    • Search the Data

    • Browse by Company / Manufacturer

    • Browse by Physician / Recipient

    • Browse by Teaching Hospital

    • Or filters for year, type of payment, etc.

  3. Search by Company / Manufacturer

    • If you are interested in transactions from Semler Scientific (i.e. how much they paid physicians), use the company/manufacturer search.

    • Enter “Semler Scientific” in the company/manufacturer name field.

    • Optionally, set the year (e.g. 2023, 2022) or a range of years.

    • Submit the search.

  4. Filter or refine results

After getting initial results, you’ll likely see a table with columns like:

  • Recipient (physician) name

  • State / location

  • Payment amount

  • Type of payment (consulting, research, travel, etc.)

  • Date or year

You can often filter further by:

  • Type of payment (research vs. general)

  • State

  • Recipient name

  • Payment amount thresholds

  1. Click through for details

    • Each row in the table might be clickable for more detail.

    • If you click a recipient’s name, you might see a breakdown of all payments from that company to that physician (by date, purpose, etc.).

    • If you click the company, you might see a summary of all its payments across years.

  2. Download data / export

    • The site typically allows exporting the results (CSV, Excel) for offline analysis.

    • Look for an Export or Download button near the data table.

    • Some searches might have limits on how much data is displayed at once; exporting is useful for large results.

  3. Browse other perspectives

    • If instead you want to see payments to a particular physician or teaching hospital, you can use the physician/recipient or teaching hospital search modes.

    • Then you could see which companies (including Semler Scientific, if relevant) have made payments to that physician/hospital.
